Mesothelioma mostly results following asbestos exposure. The other risk factors include exposure to carbon nanotubes, simian virus 40, radiation therapy, intrapleural thorium dioxide, zeolites. Some of these risk factors are disputed by experts regarding their roles as causes of mesothelioma. Most patients may have BAP1 gene defect that puts them at greater risk for developing the cancer.
