Mesothelioma Prognosis

IN SHORT
Mesothelioma prognosis depends on the stage of the disease as well as the clinical, radiographic and histologic factors. Most patients live between 12 and 18 months.

As it is discussed in mesothelioma staging, the stage of the cancer is an important prognostic factor. The following table shows the Mean Survival Time (MST) of the corresponding stage:

In addition other factors also play significant roles in the prognosis of cancer patients.
Clinical factors associated with poor prognosis:
  • male gender
  • high white blood cell count
  • low hemoglobin
  • high platelet count
  • high lactate dehydrogenase
  • sarcomatous or mixed histology
Radiographic factors associated with poor prognosis:
  • high standardized uptake value (SUV > 10) for PET scanning
Histologic factors associated with poor prognosis:
  • low neutrophil lymphocyte ratio
  • elevated levels of SMRP and osteopontin
  • elevated levels of CEC (circulating endothelial cells)

And generally the following factors are associated with good prognosis:
  • age under 65 years
  • stage I disease
  • lack of chest pain
  • pure epithelial histology
  • symptoms present for more than 6 months before diagnosis
